The highest mountain in North Sumatra (2,600 metres) had erupted at 2:51 a.m. on Sunday forcing people to flee.
"The sound of eruption was strong and molten lava could be seen clearly from afar. As a result, people became frightened and left their villages," said a villager on Sunday.
Mount Sinabung had erupted twice on September 3, 2010, with the first eruption at 4:45 a.m. and the second at 6 p.m.
Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak are active volcanoes in the province.
A total of 534 villagers, including children, from Sukameriah have been accommodated at an evacuation camp in Payung sub-district.
All of them were fine on Tuesday and have received logistical supplies, while a medical team from the Medan chapter of the Indonesian Red Cross has been on location to provide help. (H-YH)
