Kepala Stasiun Geofisika BMKG Deli Serdang, Teguh Rahayu, dalam keterangan tertulisnya yang diterima Senin, menjelaskan, klasifikasi tingkat sebaran petir di Sumatera Utara dibagi menjadi tiga kategori, yaitu dengan dengan kategori rendah, sedang dan tinggi.
Dari hasil rekaman lightning detector, daerah yang memiliki kategori sambaran petir Tinggi berada di daerah Deli Serdang dengan 4.303 sebaran dan Serdang Bedagai dengan 7.273 sebaran.

"Sedangkan daerah yang memiliki kategori sambaran petir Sedang berada di daerah Asahan, Batubara, Dairi, Karo, Labuhanbatu, Langkat, Medan dan Simalungun," kata wanita yang bisa sapa Ayyu tersebut.
Lebih lanjut ia mengatakan, dominasi sebaran petir dengan kategori rendah berada di wilayah Binjai, Gunungsitoli, Humbang Hasundutan, Labuhanbatu Selatan, Labuhanbatu Utara, Mandailing Natal, Nias, Nias Barat.

Kemuidan Nias Selatan, Nias Utara, Padanglawas, Padanglawas Utara, Padangsidempuan, Pakpak Bharat, Pematang Siantar, Samosir, Sibolga, Tanjung Balai, Tapanuli Selatan, Tapanuli Tengah, Tapanuli Utara, Tebing Tinggi dan Toba Samosir.
Mengingat intensitas petir tersebut, ia mengimbau masyarakat yang berada di wilayah dengan tingkat aktivitas petir sedang dan tinggi, untuk meningkatkan kewaspadaan.
Terutama ketika berada di luar rumah, di atas gedung bertingkat, di dekat tower listrik atau antena, dan pepohonan yang tinggi.
