Kepala Stasiun Geofisika BMKG Deli Serdang Teguh Rahayu melalui keterangan tertulisnya yang diterima di Medan, Jumat (4/9), menjelaskan klasifikasi tingkat sebaran petir di Sumatera Utara dibagi menjadi tiga kategori yakni dengan kategori rendah, sedang, dan tinggi.
Dari hasil rekaman lightning detector, pada periode satu pekan terakhir, daerah yang memiliki kategori sambaran petir tinggi berada di daerah Deli Serdang dan Langkat.

Sedangkan daerah yang memiliki kategori sambaran petir sedang berada di daerah Asahan, Dairi, Karo, Medan, Samosir, Serdang Bedagai, dan Simalungun.
Dominasi sebaran petir dengan kategori rendah berada di wilayah Batubara, Binjai, Gunungsitoli, Humbang Hasundutan, Labuhanbatu, Labuhanbatu Selatan, Labuhanbatu Utara, Mandailing Natal, Nias, Nias Barat, Nias Selatan.

Kemudian Nias Utara, Padanglawas, Padanglawas Utara, Padangsidempuan, Pakpak Bharat, Pematang Siantar, Sibolga, Tanjung Balai, Tapanuli Selatan, Tapanuli Tengah, Tapanuli Utara, Tebing Tinggi, dan Toba Samosir.
Terkait aktivitas petir tersebut ia mengimbau masyarakat yang berada di wilayah dengan tingkat aktivitas petir sedang dan tinggi, untuk selalu meningkatkan kewaspadaan.
Terutama ketika berada di luar rumah, di atas gedung bertingkat, di dekat tower listrik atau antena, dan pepohonan yang tinggi.*
